From now until March 2018, about 300 athletes and coaches from the USA and Canada will make Trinidad and Tobago their winter training camp. Following on the inaugural visit of team CAMO from Montreal, Canada in 2017, the Aquatic Centre will welcome 10 club, university and national teams to the Couva facility for swimming and diving sessions this year.
The invitations to swim teams from North America is spearheaded by the Business Development Unit of the Sports Company of Trinidad & Tobago (SporTT) in an effort to aggressively market the facility to the aquatics community across the Americas as well as to position Trinidad & Tobago as an ideal destination for training, particularly in the winter months.
The media is invited to witness the afternoon training sessions on Friday 5 January from 3:00pm, to be followed by an opportunity (at the end/beginning of the sessions) at 4:00pm for interviews and photos with Minister of Sport & Youth Affairs Hon. Darryl Smith as he greets the visiting coaches and athletes .
There are currently seven teams using the facility's swim and dive pools. They include:
- Columbia University Swim & Dive (USA)
- CAMO Natation (Canada)
- Pointe Claire (Canada)
- Sherbrook University (Canada)
- William Patterson University Swim & Dive (USA)
- Duke Univeristy Dive (USA)
- National Paralympic Swim (Canada)
