Larry Gomes was not the typical West Indies batsman. His calm demeanour provided the perfect foil in a middle order that feature towering, hard-hitting batsmen such as Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Viv Richards and Richie Richardson.
More than a cricketer, Gomes was one of five brothers from a sporting family, which may have forged his competitive and defiant nature.
As a left-hander, his elegance was particularly notable, and he was known as a steadying influence in the West Indies innings, including several battling performances that helped regional side to victory. This included the West Indies tour of England in 1984, where he scored 349 runs in his first four innings.
Gomes could also bowl, preferring his right arm as an off-break or medium pace bowler. He was named one of five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1985. Larry Gomes finished his career with 3,171 runs and 15 wickets in 60 Tests, 1,415 runs and 41 wickets in One Day Internationals and overall, 12,982 first class runs (107 wickets).
