Manny Ramjohn represented the pride of Gasparillo and was an excellent middle-distance runner.
Ramjohn secured T&T’s first CAC (Central American and Caribbean) Games gold medal in 1946 in Baranquilla, Colombia while setting a new mark of 15 minutes, 54.8 seconds at altitude in the process. It was also the country’s first gold in a major international sporting event.
In 1948, Trinidad and Tobago debuted at the Olympic Games, and Ramjohn was one of the five T&T athletes to compete. He contested the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres events and made the final in the latter event but did not finish.
Before those achievements, however, Ramjohn competed at the White City Games in London over one mile and three miles in 1939.
He was also notable in the scouting arena, earning awards from the Scouting Associations of T&T and the UK and the Hummingbird Medal (Silver) for Social Work and Sport.
