The Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) advises that the selection of match venues for the ICC Cricket Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is the responsibility of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Trinidad and Tobago’s bid to host T20 World Cup matches for West Indies 2024 featured multiple venues that could potentially host match days, warm-up matches and practice sessions for visiting World Cup teams.
Even before this country’s bid was submitted, a joint ICC/Cricket West Indies team visited Trinidad and Tobago in May 2023 to inspect several venues, including Queen’s Park Oval, the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, UWI SPEC, UTT O’Meara, Diego Martin Sporting Complex and National Cricket Centre.
The visiting inspection team made various recommendations for the infrastructural and technological updates needed at each T&T venue to ensure eligibility to host warm-ups, competitive matches, and practice sessions.
Although Trinidad and Tobago has been announced as a World Cup host, the matches allocated to venues are yet to be confirmed. The ICC is currently touring regional venues and is due to return to Trinidad and Tobago later this month for follow-up inspections.
It is also noteworthy that a Trinidad and Tobago Newsday article, dated December 2nd, 2023, confirmed that the ICC is the sole body responsible for allocating World Cup matches. In the article, Queen’s Park Cricket Club president Dr. Nigel Camacho was quoted as saying: “Ultimately, what CWI has indicated is that the final decision lies with the recommendation from the ICC committee stationed in the Caribbean to make the recommendations on which venues can actually host games during the World Cup.”
