MEDIA RELEASE
The Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) congratulates two of its employees on the recognition of their contributions to sport at the annual National Awards Ceremony to be held on 24 September at President’s House. Merissa Aguilleira and Navin Stewart will join the cadre of distinguished citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to receive the Hummingbird Medal Gold.
Aguilleira is well-known and regarded for her prowess as a wicketkeeper and top order batter with the West Indies Women cricket team, and leadership as captain for eight years. The highlight of her captaincy of the regional team was guiding the team to its first World Cup championship in 2016. Born in Marac village in southern Trinidad, Merissa started playing cricket at the tender age of 8. She earned her first national cap on the Trinidad and Tobago U23 team in 2002 and went on to join the national senior team three years later.
Navin Stewart hails from Roxborough, Tobago and made his regional cricket debut at the relatively late age of 25 at the Stanford T20 Cricket Tournament. His bowling and batting performances there led his to numerous first-class cricket caps with the national team as well as franchise teams in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
SporTT salutes Merissa and Navin, both Athlete Development Officers in the Community Sport Unit, for their spirit, commitment and service to Trinidad and Tobago in the sphere of sport.
