Community Rural Outreach Camp starts August 5

Over 400 youngsters will benefit from the inaugural SporTT Community Outreach Rural Camp coming to five Trinidad communities.
The three-week camp will run from August 5-23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays at Blanchisseuse Secondary School, Matura Recreation Ground, Biche Recreation Ground, Grand Chemin Recreation Ground and Erin Recreation Ground.

Camp participants will develop their fundamental motor skills, including running, hopping, throwing and catching in the first week, which will be followed by two weeks of teamwork drills and sportsmanship-focused activities. They will be engaged through the following sports: netball, football cricket, basketball and table tennis. However, there will be no netball at Biche Recreation Ground.

SporTT’s Head of Community Sport, Lyndell Hoyte-Sanchez, said the Camp has several objectives geared towards the development of children in the target communities.

“Sport is dynamic, sport is fun, sport is a way of life,” Hoyte-Sanchez said. “We want to give children the opportunity to experience a life of sport as this will lead to them developing lifelong skills: leadership, teamwork, decision-making, social and physical skills, as well as developing positive self-esteem.

“We want to develop citizens that will contribute to advancing their respective communities through sport and sport participation.”
The Camp is being hosted in collaboration with the I Choose Sport Summer of Sports initiative and will be supported by the T&T Police Service and community health centres.

The programme will help the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago to achieve its goals of community engagement and ‘Sport For All’ in accordance with the National Sport Policy. It will introduce organised sport to target communities, get children outdoors and participating in fun activities, develop their social skills and promote the benefits of physical and mental activity.

At the end of Camp, participants will display their skills in a competitive activity.
